After becoming a teacher it became pretty clear that no one outside of education can understand just how brutal and time-consuming it is to be a teacher — especially when it comes to grading essays. But on the flip-side most teachers don't know how or where technology can help them. Or worse, they're surrounded by all this awful technology that's been forced upon them. My district's attendance system required three separate logins! Three! Argghh! Last year I had four sections of the same Senior English prep. That meant 96 papers would come in all at once. I was super-passionate about getting these regular-level students ready for the rigors of college so I would find myself spending 15, 20, 30 minutes per paper. That multiplied by 96 is insane. That's where came from — as a teacher I felt the same pain you're feeling but my programming background allowed me to see where a little bit of technology could go a long way.
3. A , , or paper will create a "dialogue" between the essay author's ideas and her sources, and also among the sources themselves. and below evaluations will often summarize one point at a time, with the essay author's idea stated at the end. If you imagine a synthesis essay as a room in which the synthesis writer is joined by the authors of her/his sources, the , , or essay has everyone engaged in conversation or debate, with everyone commenting on (or arguing against) each other's ideas directly. In the and below essay, each person in the room stands up in turn, gives a speech, and sits down, with little or no question and answer period in between or afterward.
In the course of the essay, your thesis should have been subjected to scrutiny that enables us to emerge with a deeper understanding of the subject. The conclusion should show how you have proven the thesis, illustrating our progress, including any caveats or qualifications that some of the antitheses may have brought to light. It is also a good idea to show why this thesis is important, and speculate on some of its possible implications. These speculations may be followed by a call for further research of the new issues your thesis raises. A conclusion such as this leaves the readers hungering for more, as they are not only persuaded of the validity of your thesis, but also tantalized with new possibilities. This style of conclusion allows for much more creative expression, as there is more room for speculative opinion.
